The divisions within the opposition Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) eventually caused its rupture on 14 November. The president of the party, Roberto Iglesias, resigned because of irreconcilable differences between three internal factions: those pushing for an alliance with President Néstor Kirchner (the "K" Radicals); those pursuing a coalition with former economy minister Roberto Lavagna (the "L" Radicals); and those wanting to rally behind their own candidate in the 2007 presidential elections, (the "R" Radicals).
